Project Name: El Monte Busway & Transit Center
Owner: Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority (LA Metro)
El Monte Station
Public Transit Sign Project Background
The project is the largest bus facility west of Chicago, handling 22,000 passengers per day, with the capacity to handle twice as many. The new El Monte Station has been expanded to more than double its previous size, with bus bays also increasing from 16 to 29. Construction started in September 2010, with the grand opening taking place on 10/14/2012.
Project Review and Approval Process
After first going through the approval process for Los Angeles Metro Authority, Promotional Signs went through a competitive bid process and was contracted by the general contractor, KPRS Construction to handle the full signage scope of the project.
The scope for the project included a full signage package ranging from vinyl window graphics and interior ADA signage to channel letter ID signs, wayfinding and directional signage, large clearance bars, reverse pan letters on a concrete base, parking lot signage, elevator ID signage, plus two custom designed sign types, a stainless steel street pylon sign and (29) custom bus bay ID signs with integrated LED display board and speaker system.
Be sure to check out the full project description in our custom sign gallery.
Street pylon sign
This sign is a 24’ tall, double sided pylon sign to update and replace the current sign. The sign is designed with an upscale look and a radius face requiring custom fabrication of the framing and mounting of the stainless steel panels. The lighting included reverse pan halo illuminated letters for the top section Metro logo, with illuminated push thru acrylic graphics for the lower tenant panel areas. Our scope also included the installation of a spread footing base with finished concrete pad at the base, painted black to match the sign.
Bus Bay ID Signage
LA Metro had never utilized a sign type like this so Promotional Signs was contracted to design/build the custom sign type and incorporate the various components. Each sign type consisted of a 12’ tall, 8” square tube steel post with welded base plate and dual decorative stainless steel fins on each side. The sign also included a custom made double sided 48” wide LED information display board produced by Vantage LED of Corona, CA and installed by Promotional.
The boards are integrated with the arrivals system to provide route information to all passengers. In addition to the LED board, all signs also included an integrated speaker built in to the sign tower and the signs on the Ground level included additional site lighting integrated to the top of the tower.
